60 seconds with George Norcliffe, Local Business Manager at Metro Bank and Professional Ice Hockey Player
• George, please tell us a bit about yourself
I am a Local Business Manager at Metro Bank in Guildford and have worked here for over six years now. I started in the bank as a Cashier.
I’m also a professional ice hockey player, currently signed with the Basingstoke Bison.
I’ve been playing hockey for 15 years or so and turned professional when I was 18. Since then I have worked my way up to the national league, which would be equivalent to the Premier League in football, we’re just not paid as much! We train 3 times a week and play 2 games at the weekend in places as far as Leeds and Hull.
• Please tell us about your role at Metro Bank, Guildford.
My role is to look after our portfolio of clients alongside Karina, also a Local Guildford Business Manager at Metro Bank.
Myself and Karina the first point of contact for our business and commercial clients. We create opportunities where Metro Bank can provide assistance and help customers to grow their business. Providing support, services and connecting them in the local business community.
A large part of my job is to actively grow my portfolio of clients by regularly networking, and I am fortunate that my portfolio of clients and professional contacts refer me to their clients.
A business will contact me that might be looking for change, or even just requiring a bank that acts in a different manner to others. We focus on service and convenience. We have real people on the ground and give the customers the choice of how they want to bank with us.
When a new client decides to transfer their banking to Metro Bank, I pride myself on making the process as easy as possible by creating a smooth transition from their old bank to Metro Bank.
Everyday at Metro Bank is different so it’s hard to describe a typical day. Yesterday I was having coffee with two of my clients introducing them to each other, today I’m sitting here having an interview at The County Club. Tomorrow I am presenting to a prospective client.
I genuinely love my role at Metro Bank and it makes a real difference when you work alongside people who are passionate about what they do as well.
• As a young member at The County Club, what opportunities do you feel your membership provides to you?
Firstly as a young professional member, I’d have to say guidance.
The Club has some fantastic members who I’ve had the pleasure of being introduced to. There have been some key people who really understand business and have given me important guidance simply through conversation.
When I step into the Club I wear my Metro Bank pin, members recognize the brand are always keen to ask me questions about the Bank.
The County Club is a central hub for businesses to relax and connect in Guildford, I personally have thoroughly enjoyed building many relationships and introducing new clients to Metro Bank that I have had the pleasure of meeting through The County Club.
• What do you enjoy most about being a member of The County Club?
It’s such a great place to bring clients, especially guests who haven’t been before. It’s a unique experience going to The County Club, the place, the members, there’s a sense of calmness that you don’t find anywhere else locally.
I remember the first time I went to The Club, looking up at the windows that overlooked the high street, thinking it was a superb central location, hidden in plain sight on Guildford High Street.
Guildford is generally a busy place and a lot of the local restaurants are too. Whenever I take clients to The Club, the atmosphere is always relaxed, yet professional, efficient and with a personal service.
The other side of being a member is being able to connect my clients with members and vice versa. The atmosphere combined with the great menu that has never failed to impress, makes social and professional lunches really enjoyable occasions.
• Why would you recommend the club to those interested in joining?
I think for the same reasons I’ve found The Club so valuable. The members I’ve been introduced to, the guidance I’ve received and the business I’ve been able to generate. The setting makes it such a great place to escape from the normality of the office.
I do think it’s true to say that you get out what you put in. Just by joining The Club won’t necessarily mean you’ll generate business or be introduced to great members. You need to put the time into going there, networking and making your own connections to really see the best of what The Club can offer.
• What do you love most about Guildford?
I really struggle to answer this questions because there are so many things I love about Guildford.
From a professional side, there’s such a great business community, from a personal side, it’s a beautiful place. Guildford has great links to London, but also offers the green areas, with places such as the Castle Ground to relax and the unique high street that’s unlike any other.
It’s been my hometown for a number of years and I love living here.
